bringing life to the perimeter

Welcome to this wonderful, custom Kitchen Garden designed by Jennifer Holt for our wonderful client, Jessica, in Jester Village in the Northwest Hills of Austin, Texas.

Perimeter gardens are an easy way to bring attention to an otherwise overlooked space. Sitting on the back of a greenbelt preserve, this family was looking for a way to enrich their son’s love of gardening, as well as design a featured space off of their pool.

Unclaimed space

Some of the initial issues that Jennifer could see was that there was split sunlight in the area, encroaching greenbelt growth and drainage issues. Up to this point the homeowner was having difficulty getting grass to grow in certain areas of the space. The design process started with the idea of ‘extending’ the pool decking and giving the clients a walkway to access their new raised beds. Jennifer approached this by creating a terraced landscape above the beds so the water could drain back into the preserve.

From the size of the planters, to the placement of the planters down to what seasonal veggies are appropriate … all of it was organized so well by Jennifer.

pollinator plots

One of the passions of the family’s 12-year-old son was creating a wild life habitat in his front yard. His interest in gardening started at a young age and he has worked hard to attract pollinators of all kinds onto their property. This made the next step of installation a breeze.

To draw more interest to the 50 ft perimeter, Jennifer and the homeowner decided to create pollinator plots on the ends of the beds. It wasn’t long before hummingbirds and butterflies were visiting the space.

See What Jessica has to say about her Seed Sage Experience…

When we embarked on this project, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was a bit nervous because I deeply believe I have a “brown thumb”. My mother has the greenest thumb there is, but me … not so much. My son, who shows very little enthusiasm for most things (he’s a preteen so I think that’s pretty normal) showed an incredible interest in growing his own veggies and taking care of them (clearly the green thumb skipped a generation and went straight around me to my son). So, with talks of responsibility and commitment to learning about this, we decided to proceed.

First of all, I must say the organization of this project was impeccable. From the size of the planters, to the placement of the planters (not too much shade or sun), to the scheduling of what week it would all be installed and what seasonal veggies are appropriate … all of it was organized so well by Jennifer. She took care of all the ordering and delivering of soil and materials needed for our project. She was present every day for the installation and construction and definitely made sure her vision was brought to life appropriately.

When the plants went in, she took extreme care on their placement as well as the placement of the pollinators to aid in maximum growth. Jennifer checks in with you every few days and definitely at least once a week to make sure all is going well. She is always available for questions or if you need a little extra help. She organically treats for pests and shows you how to do so as well. She even comes by, in person, to show you what to do to maximize growth. We loved her information on micronutrients. Even while waiting for the plants to produce, you can enjoy micronutrients from them- the kids very much enjoy going to the garden to pick these micronutrient and we’ll add them to our smoothies.

Her recommendations for soil and plant nutrients are on point with instructions that are easy to follow. My kids love watching the growth that happens daily - we are still a bit early in our process, but can report growth of squash, peppers, cucumbers, beans and tomatoes … and it’s only been 1 month!!!

Jennifer is very knowledgeable on what to plant and when/where to plant it. Since we began our garden in late summer, we began with fall veggies. Once those have been harvested, Jennifer will help us plan our spring/summer garden. Her hands on approach is why I feel comfortable attempting to grow our veggies- as stated before, my brown thumb is real, but with Jennifer’s guidance (and my son’s enthusiasm), it can be overcome!!
